Balopi and Kwape Imposters granted bail



A Gaborone West couple that has been fingered in fraud crimes was this morning granted bail. The two lovers Isaac Hisrchfield and Bontle Masala are alleged to have been defrauding persons and businesses in Gaborone imposing as Gaborone North Member of Parliament Mpho Balopi and Dr Lemogang Kwape. They (accused) have allegedly been collecting donations and funds in the names of the said Ministers.

Prosecution this morning appearing before Village Magistrate Batho Kgerethwa said that they have made progress in the matter and will not be opposing bail application. The conditions of the bail are that each accused person pay a sum of P2000 and provide a single surity who will bind themselves with P2000, they are to also report weekly on Fridays at Serious Crime and not interfere with the state investigations. The duet is facing a single count of obtaining by false pretenses and two counts of attempt to obtain fraudulently.

The particulars of the offense are that the accused persons on July 8th, 2020 at the Central Business District (CBD) acted together in consent and with common purpose fraudulently obtained a sum of P5000 from Dr Tawanda Masenya of Zeta Clinic. It is said that the accused phoned the victim seeking donations for one of the schools in Balopi’s constituency. The second charge reads that the couple with an attempt to fraudulently obtain P5000 phoned Barisama LTD (Pty) and Woolworth stores requesting for donations.

Furthermore, it is said that the accused persons had used false forms to convince victims to make donations to them. They are to appear for mention on the 31st August 2020.
